Pigmentation is the dysfunction of the melanocyte cell. When this cell is exposed to the harmful UV rays from the sun over and over again for years, it starts to sporadically produce pigment and dump it into the epidermis.
Over time this pigment makes its way up the layers of the skin making itself visible as brown spots or freckling. This type of pigmentation is typically caused by overexposure to the sun.
Another problem that happens alongside freckles and pigmentation, is stretching of small blood vessels, giving your skin a mottled, reddish appearance, and decreased elastin and collagen. This gives your overall skin a mottled, grayish, and wrinkled appearance.
At Better Life Clinics, we use a large panel of treatment options, including chemical peels, LED light therapy, microneedling, hydrafacial, PRP Facial, and our most favorite treatments: BBL Forever Young, and Resurfacing Perfected. We tailor your treatment for you, based on your needs and your skin condition giving you the best results possible.
Melasma
Another form of Pigmentation is called Melasma. This is caused by some medications and Hormonal disturbances. These triggers have a similar effect on the melanocyte cell however once this cell begins to dysfunction the pigment is instead embedded deep into the basal cell layer, appearing in large symmetrical patches usually on the forehead and cheeks. These pigments are worsened by sun exposure.
Treating melasma can be challenging, as it is a chronic problem that can last for years. Here at Better Life clinics, we have multiple modalities in treating melasma. We always start with the least invasive (hydroquinone cream), with chemical peels and work our way up if it is of the stubborn type (Pro fractional laser with PRP). A high quality, mineral-based, Medical-grade Sunscreen is a MUST when treating Melasma. We love EltaMD and PCA products.
We highly recommend booking in a Skin Consultation with one of our therapists so we can design a treatment plan to achieve your best and most healthy skin!
